Green Tea vs Matcha: What's the Difference?

Green Tea vs Matcha: What's the Difference?

They come from the same plant, share a reputation for health benefits, and are often mentioned in the same breath — but green tea and matcha are actually quite different experiences. If you've ever wondered which one is right for you, here's the breakdown.

Same Plant, Different Process

Both green tea and matcha come from Camellia sinensis, the tea plant. The difference lies entirely in how the leaves are grown and processed.

  • Green tea is grown in the sun, harvested, then steamed or pan-fired and dried. You steep the whole leaves in water and discard them afterward.
  • Matcha is grown in the shade for several weeks before harvest — a process that boosts chlorophyll and amino acid content — then stone-ground into a fine powder. You whisk the powder directly into water and drink the entire leaf.

How They Differ in the Cup

Flavour. Green tea tends to be lighter and more vegetal or grassy. Matcha is more intense — rich, slightly sweet, and distinctly umami, a result of the shade-growing process.

Caffeine. Because you consume the whole leaf, matcha generally delivers more caffeine per serving than a cup of steeped green tea.

Antioxidants. For the same reason, matcha is often considered a more concentrated source of the antioxidants found in green tea, since none of the leaf is discarded.

Ritual. Green tea is quick to make — steep and go. Matcha traditionally involves sifting, whisking, and a bit more ceremony, which some people find part of the appeal rather than a hassle.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • Want something light, easy, and quick? Green tea is the simpler daily option.
  • Want a more concentrated, ritual-driven cup with steadier energy? Matcha is worth the extra few minutes.

There's no wrong answer — many people keep both in rotation depending on the moment.
